My First Teacher: Ram Dass

1931 – 2019

More than 50 years ago, while hanging out at a friends place, I saw this book on the table, Be Here Now. I had no idea who Ram Dass was but the book’s title intrigued me, so I sat down and started reading.

This was in the early 70s. I was seeking but not sure what it was I was looking for. This passage caught my attention:

“EXCEPT YE BE CONVERTED
&
BECOME AS LITTLE CHILDREN
YE SHALL NOT ENTER
THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN”
UNLESS YOU
START AGAIN
BECOME THAT TRUSTING
OPEN SURENDERED BEING
THE ENERGY CAN’T COME IN
THAT IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
**THE ENERGY**
IT IS THE SAME THING
COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS

What did it mean? What was cosmic consciousness anyhow? The words pointed to an inner space that was perfect and beautiful. Go in, it said, over and over, go within until you come to the place where the Guru sits.

At the time I had no clue what this meant but it felt right.

This is the place of pure being, that inner place where you dwell, you just be. There is nothing to be done in that place.. From that place then, it all happens, it manifests in perfect harmony with the universe. Because you are the laws of the universe.
~Ram Dass

Naturally I became very curious about this guy and what he had to share. When, several years later in Boulder, Colorado, I was honored to sit with him, still not understanding what was happening, I found a Truth that I could not understand but a Truth that I knew within my Soul.

Later I would come to recognize that this was one of the first steps I took towards Awakening to the Truth of who I am.

I am (and so are you) the Divine in drag!

When you go into the woods and look at trees, you see all these trees. And some of them are bent, and some are evergreens, and some are whatever..and you look at the tree and you allow it. You see why it is the way it is. You sort of understand that it didn’t get enough light, so it turned that way. And you don’t get all emotional about it. You just allow it. The minute you get around humans, you loose that. You are constantly saying “You’re too this, or I’m too that.” That judging mind comes in…and so I practice turning people into trees. Which means appreciating them just as the way they are.

And so began this amazing journey. Many teachers later, here I am. Now fully on this path. My mission is to share what I have learned and to help and support other seekers. Come, take my hand, let’s talk.
